| Amos, the man, is a breeder of sheep, and he also refers to himself as one who takes care of sycamore trees. He is from Tekoa, in the Kingdom of Judah, about 10 miles south of Jerusalem, and yet the LORD calls him to preach a stinging rebuke against the wealthy ruling families of the Northern Kingdom, Israel.
Amos declares that he was not a prophet, but that the Lord took him from the field and put him in the place to preach the Lord's message. Amos is a prophet in the true sense that he receives and tells forth the Word of the Lord. |
