Kairos Prison Ministry

Kairos Prison Ministry

A number of people from St Matthews are involved with the Kairos prison ministry at Dillwynia women’s prison, South Windsor, and Emu Plains women’s prison.

This is a very exciting and worthwhile ministry and we believe we have a ringside seat for the many wonderful things and in fact miracles, that God is doing in the hearts and lives of inmates in the prison system through Kairos. Most inmates see themselves as sinners with big problems and extremely low self esteem. Incarceration brings them up short and gives them time to re-think their life choices. Many have had some Christian input in the past, some are from other countries and religions. This is a mission field in our backyard.

A team of about 34 volunteers presents a Short Course to 18 residents over four consecutive days, once or twice a year, 9.30am – 5.30pm. The Gospel is presented in a series of 10 talks followed by discussion. There are meditations, Bible reading and lots of singing. Our motto is “Listen, listen, love, love” and God’s love is expressed by the prayer, letters and home cooked biscuits from the outside community and the delicious meals prepared by our team in a nearby church kitchen and trucked in, piping hot!

On the Friday night we have a closing ceremony in the visitors’ centre. You might like to come! This is always a very moving night when the outside community can hear from the women, how they have been blessed by God through Kairos.

We return every Sunday afternoon to present an ongoing Journey programme. The Christian community within Dillwynia and other prisons is growing and statistics show that Kairos graduates are very few on the list of re-offenders.

If you would like more information on how you can be part of this exciting ministry please contact the St Matts Office for more information.
